Milwaukee Smoke Shop Worker Hospitalized After Violent Robbery

Right near Farwell Avenue and Brady Street on Milwaukee’s east side, Purple Haze Vape and Smoke was violently robbed Wednesday evening.

Milwaukee police say the break-in occurred before 6 p.m. The owner, Fez Farooqui, says the two suspects entered through the front door and smashed a glass display case. Surveillance footage shows the sequence: one masked man confronts an employee as the worker tries to hand over product. That robber jumps the glass counter, grabs the register and hurls a glass tip jar at the employee’s head. A second assailant is seen leaping from the display case onto the employee and stomping on his head multiple times.

Farooqui described arriving to find his employee “blood everywhere,” shaken and in shock. The victim suffered two broken ribs and required stitches to his ear; he was treated at a hospital and has since been released to recover at home.

The robbers grabbed what they could, knocked over a second display case, stuffed items into a garbage bag and fled. Farooqui says they stole the cash register, broke two credit card machines and damaged multiple showcases. He estimates about $10,000 in losses and damages. The shop closed early while police investigated.

“I’m not worried about things that got damaged because I can replace this,” Farooqui said. “But somebody getting hurt — that’s more painful.” He has started a GoFundMe to help the injured employee.

Milwaukee police continue to search for the two suspects. Anyone with information is asked to contact Milwaukee Police at 414-935-7360, or Crime Stoppers at 414-224-TIPS, or submit a tip through the P3 Tips app.
